The Saab JAS 39 Gripen is a single-engine, fighter attack and reconnaissance aircraft manufactured by a Swedish aerospace company called Saab Group. The Saab 39 is Sweden’s first fourth-generation jet fighter. The Gripen is equipped to carry an extensive range of air-to-air and air-to-surface weaponry. The maiden flight of the JAS 39 Gripen took place on the 9th of December 1988 and it went into service on the 1st of November 1997. Primary users were the Swedish Air Force, South African Air Force, Czech Air Force and Hungarian Air Force. The number of JAS 39 Gripen produced up to date is approx. 247. Cost per unit was approx. 68.90 million USD (2006).
